
Rookie dominates RiverHawks in Otters' 5-2 win

LOVES PARK, Ill. - Evansville rookie Kyle Dahman struck out 11 RiverHawks over six innings on Thursday as the Otters beat Rockford, 5-2, at Road Ranger Stadium.
Brandon Cohen and Robert Sabates each had two hits for the RiverHawks, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 2,987.
The Otters salvaged the finale of the three-game series. The RiverHawks fell 4½ games behind Frontier League West-leading Windy City, which beat Gateway, 6-5. The regular season ends a month from Thursday.
Dahman (1-1) has struck out 19 batters in two starts against Rockford. On Thursday, his first seven outs were on strikeouts. He walked two and scattered two runs, one earned, on five hits over six innings.
Evansville never trailed. After the RiverHawks tied the game at 1-1 on back-to-back doubles by Cohen and Sabates in the second inning, the Otters took the lead for good on Frank Meade's RBI single in the third. Evansville tacked on two runs in the fifth inning and Tyler Diamond hit a leadoff home run in the ninth.
Justin Smith pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 10th save.
Rockford starter Brett Durand lost for the first time since July 5. Durand (7-4) gave up four runs, three earned, on eight hits over seven innings.
The RiverHawks stranded eight, five of them in scoring position.
The RiverHawks head to Marion for a three-game series against the Southern Illinois Miners. The series opener is at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
The RiverHawks come home for a six-game homestand beginning Tuesday, Aug. 11. Washington is in that night to start a three-game series on Two-For Tuesday. Tickets are two for the price of one, and so are hot dogs.
