Washington Wild Things News Release

Loves Park, Ill. - The Washington Wild Things (34-39), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, outdueled the Rockford RiverHawks (36-36) 8-2 Tuesday night at Road Ranger Stadium.

In what became a pitchers duel between starters Washington's Jason Neitz and Rockford's Brett Durand, the Wild Things were able to score two in each of the last three innings to get the victory.

Locked in a 2-2 tie heading into the seventh, infielder Chris Raniere was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning for the Wild Things. A wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt got him into scoring position allowing him to score the game-winning run on infielder Michael Parker's RBI single. Outfielder Chris Sidick added an insurance run on an RBI double that plated Parker for a 4-2 lead.

The top of the order for the Wild Things struggled until late in the game, so they turned to the bottom hitters in their lineup. The team's six, seven and eight hitters combined to go 7-12 with three walks on the night, scoring four of the team's eight runs. Catcher Alan Robbins broke out of a slump, leading all hitters by going 3-4 with three RBIs, including his fourth homerun of the season. In his Wild Things' debut, outfielder Ryan Groth, who came over in a trade with River City that sent Ernie Banks out of town, went 3-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Grant Psomas contributed two doubles, continuing to lead the team with 18 for the season. Jacob Dempsey hit a two-run inside-the-park homerun, his second of the season, in the ninth giving him 22 homeruns in 2009. Parker's single extended his hitting streak to 11 games and he has now hit safely in 35 of 36 games.

Neitz (7-3), the team leader in wins, outdueled Durand (7-5) by pitching a complete game, while allowing just two runs on six hits and striking out five. He was helped out by solid defense behind him that turned three inning-ending double plays.

The win snaps a three game losing streak for the Wild Things who continue their series with the RiverHawks Wednesday night at 8:05 p.m. The game will air on flagship WJPA 95.3 F.M beginning at 7:55. Washington returns home on August 18th. Tickets are available at the CONSOL Energy Park box office.
