Brampton Steelheads News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Steelheads hosted the Erie Otters Friday night at the Hershey Centre for their second of four meetings on the season. The last time these two faced off against each other was back on November 10th at the Dow Energy Center, where Alex DeBrincat recorded a hat-trick in a 5-2 Otters victory. The Otters come into the game leading the OHL in points and ranked the number one team in the CHL.

The first period saw a fast tempo game with both teams trying to establish their physical dominance with some big checks and a strong forecheck. Despite each team generating glorious scoring chances early on, neither team would get on the board as Jack Flinn and Jake Lawr would stop everything that came their way. Lawr was the star in the first as he made three spectacular saves to keep the Steelheads from taking a 1-0 lead. Around the 5-minute mark of the frame, after Michael McLeod would be denied on a partial breakaway, the puck would find its way to Nathan Bastian at the top of the crease for a marvellous opportunity but Lawr too denied him. As a mad scramble in front of net ensued right after Bastian's chance, Alex Nylander would find the puck and try to roof it on Lawr but to no prevail as Lawr would get enough on it to turn it away to keep the game scoreless heading into the second. Shots in the period were 11-10 Steelheads.

The second period picked up where the first ended up big checks and an abundance of scoring opportunities from both sides. After Stephen Gibson took a holding penalty with 6:07 left in the period, the Otters would capitalized on the man advantage as Taylor Raddish would receive the Alex DeBrincat pass in the front of the net and went top glove on Flinn for his 11th of the year to give Erie the 1-0 lead. Shots in the frame were 15-5 Otters, 25-16 Otters total.

The Trout would tie it up just 38 seconds into the third as Michael McLeod would deflect the Stefan LeBlanc point shot by Lawr for his 9th goal of the year. Alexander Nylander would draw the other assist on McLeod's tally. With the goal, McLeod and Nylander extended their point streak to 7 and 6 games respectively. After McLeod's, the game picked up immensely as both sides were desperate to get that go ahead goal. Around 11 minutes left in the game, Vanya Lodnia would get that goal for Erie as he took the Nick Betz pass in the slot and buried a backhand by Flinn for his 7th goal of the season. Mississauga had a flurry of chances to tie up the game but to no luck as Jake Lawr would shut the door on a Steelheads' equalizer. Taylor Raddish would score his second powerplay goal of the game and 12th of the season, finishing off an Alex DeBrincat rebound to put the game out of reach and give the Otters the 3-1 win over the Trout. With his two assists, DeBrincat raised his league leading point total on the year to 49 which is 5 more than the London duo of Matthew Tkachuk and Christian Dvorak. With an assist in the contest, Mississauga native Dylan Strome raised his point total to 42 which is tied for fourth with London's Mitch Marner.
