Today vs. Erie:
Friday night, the Steelheads will host the Erie Otters for the only time this season at the Hershey Centre. The two teams faced off against each other on November 10th at the Dow Energy Center where Alex DeBrincat scored a first period hat-trick as the Otters bested the Trout 5-2. Last time the Otters visited Mississauga was back on February 16th where Erie blanked the Steelheads 4-0. Connor McDavid had a goal and 2 assists while Mason Marchment, defenceman Cory Genovese and Buffalo Sabres prospect Nicholas Baptiste also found the back of the net.
Erie last played yesterday night as they hosted the Kitchener Rangers. The game featured the league's two best teams as both the Otters and Rangers came in with 39 points each. After Ryan MacInnis opened the scoring for the Rangers in the first, Erie would counter with three consecutive goals as Kyle Maksimovich, Jakob Mayenschein and Alex DeBrincat would light the lamp to give the Otters a 3-1 lead. Adam Mascherin would score one late in the third for Kitchener but it wasn't enough as the Otters would take the game 3-2 and, as of now, hold the best record in the OHL. DeBrincat also added an assist for a two point night while Taylor Raddish also had a multi-point game as he compiled two assists on the night.
Leading the way for Erie has been the duo of Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome. DeBrincat, who is eligible for this year's NHL Entry Draft, leads the OHL in scoring with 47 points. His 29 goals are 11 more than Ryan MacInnis who has 18 goals on the season and sits second in that category. DeBrincat was named October's OHL Player of the Month as the sophomore recorded 16 goals and 7 assists in 12 games, including a franchise record 5 goals against the Niagara Ice Dogs back on October 1st. Last year, DeBrincat was named CHL rookie of the year as the Farmington Hills, Michigan native recorded 51 goals and 53 assists. Strome, who was drafted 3rd overall by the Arizona Coyotes in last year's draft, is tied for second in OHL scoring with London's Matthew Tkachuk, as he has accumulated 41 points with 12 goals and 29 assists. Last year, Strome led both the OHL and CHL in points as he appeared in all 68 games with the Otters, tallying 45 goals and 84 assists. Otters' goaltender Devin Williams has also been a standout on Erie this season, with a record of 16-1-1-0 with a 2.36 GAA, which ranks 2nd amongst OHL goalies and a .919 save %, which ranks 3rd. Travis Dermott is having an excellent year himself as the Leafs prospect leads the OHL in scoring amongst defencemen with 23 points (1 goal, 22 assists).
Saturday vs. Hamilton
Following Friday's game, the Trout will make their way to Hamilton for the second time this year to face the Bulldogs for the fourth time in just under a month. The Steelheads have won all three meetings between the clubs this season, outscoring the Bulldogs 11-4. The two squared off just 8 days ago on November 18th where the Steelheads beat Hamilton 5-1 on the Steelheads' school day game. Nathan Bastian lead the way for Mississauga as he recorded a goal and two assists in the contest. Alexander Nylander would have a goal and an assist and Ryan McLeod would score his first career OHL goal in the third period as he too had a goal and an assist. Daniel De Sousa opened the scoring with his first goal of the season, which also happened to be his first as a Steelhead is was followed by Thomas Lattavo's third of the season. Mississauga visited the FirstOntario Centre back on November 4th, where the Steelheads when they beat the Bulldogs 4-3. Austin Osmanski scored his first two career OHL goals, including the game winner, while Jason Smith and Damian Bourne would light the lamp as well to help lead the Trout to a big road win.
The Bulldogs' current record is 8-14-1-0 with 17 points and sit 5th in the East Division where they sit 6 points back of the fourth place Oshawa Generals and 13 points back of the first place Kingston Frontenacs. They come in with losses in 8 of their last 10 games, including a 7-1 defeated at the hands of North Bay Battalion yesterday night. The Bulldogs have now lost their last seven road games with their last victory away from home coming over a month ago in Sudbury on October 25th when the Bulldogs defeated the Wolves 6-3. Leading the way for the Bulldogs has been Stephen Harper. Harper, who was born in Hamilton, has recorded 14 goals and 13 assists in 23 games. His 27 points are tied for 18th in the OHL with North Bay's Mike Amadio and Barrie's Julius Nattinen. The Steelheads will also see Matthew Strome, who is the younger brother of Dylan Strome. The Mississauga native was the 8th overall pick in this year's OHL Priority Selection. Last year, Strome was captain of the Toronto Marlboros of the GTHL where he registered 23 goals and 37 assists in 64 games. He lead the Marlboros to last year's OHL Cup Final where he scored the overtime winner as the Marlboros defeated the Don Mills Flyers 2-1. Through his first 17 OHL games, Strome has recorded 2 goals and 2 assists which is first on the Bulldogs in rookie scoring.
Sunday vs. Oshawa
Sunday will mark the third game in three days for the Steelheads as they make their way to General Motors Centre to take on the Oshawa Generals. Last year's Memorial Cup Champions are currently 10-12-2-1 with 23 points. They are 3 points back of the third place Peterborough Petes and 7 points back of the first place Kingston Frontenacs. The last time the Steelheads visited Oshawa was back on March 14th of last season, where the Generals took down the Trout 6-1 as Oshawa would score 5 times in the third to take the game in convincing fashion. Michael Dal Colle recorded a goal and an assist while Captain, Josh Brown contributed with two assists of his own.
Oshawa last played on Sunday when they, like the Bulldogs, welcomed the 67's to town. Unlike the Bulldogs however, the Generals would get beat by the 67's as they lost 6-2. Dante Salituro had a hat-trick and an assist while Travis Konency added 5 assists in the 67's victory. Matt Mistele scored his eight of the season and Owen McDade notched his fourth of the campaign in the loss.
Leading the way for the Generals this year has been Joe Manchurek and Michael Dal Colle. Manchurek has a team leading 21 points, which includes 10 goals and 11 assists and is second on the team in plus minus at +11. Captain Michael Dal Colle has also been a key factor for the Generals with this as he is second on the team with 20 points (7 goals and 13 assists). Dal Colle was drafted 5th overall by the New York Islanders in 2014, where in his draft year, he posted 39 goals and 56 assists in 67 games for the Generals. Last year, he put up similar numbers as he posted 42 goals and 51 assists for 93 points despite playing eleven fewer games to help lead the Generals to the playoffs. In 16 playoffs games, he would record 7 goals and 18 assists as Oshawa would win the OHL Finals over the Erie Otters. In the Memorial Cup, Dal Colle recorded 2 goals and 3 assists in 4 games as the Generals defeated the Rockets 2-1 in OT with a goal by then rookie Anthony Cerilli. Cerilli, Oshawa's hero, was drafted the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 3rd round, 72nd overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft. In 20 games this year, Cirelli has recorded 5 goals and 11 assists, which is fourth on the team in scoring. The Steelheads will also see netminder Jeremy Brodeur, who is the son of former NHL superstar goaltender, Martin Brodeur. The goaltender match-up should be an interest one as both Brodeur and Jack Flinn have similar numbers. In Goals Against Average, Brodeur is 9th in the league with a 2.74 GAA while Flinn is 10th with a GAA of 2.78. Flinn's .911 save % is good for 9th in the OHL while Brodeur's .901 save % is good for 13th . Flinn and Brodeur are tied for the league lead in shutouts as both netminders have recorded 4 shutouts on the season.
