Otters Lose Early Lead in Miners 5-4 Comeback Win

(MARION, ILLINOIS) - b0 The Evansville Otters held a four run lead but the Southern Illinois Miners b

Both teams went scoreless in the first inning but outfielder DeAngelo Mack recorded a one-out walk in the second and scored on a Steve Marino home run later in the inning. The two run home run was the third homer of the season for Marino.

Evansville utilized the long ball again when outfielder Runey Davis led off the third inning with a home run. Ahead 3-0, designated hitter Luis Uribe provided an RBI double later in the inning for the four run lead.

Southern Illinois was held to just one hit until the fourth inning by Otters starter Bryce Morrow. The pitcher had five strikeouts through the first few innings but Morrow was unable to hold the 4-0 lead. Southern scored two runs in the fourth, another run in the fifth, and a go-ahead two run home run from infielder Jason Ganek in the sixth.

Trailing 5-4, Evansville would put two men on base in the ninth but closer Brandon Cunniff held on to the lead for the series-opening win.

Evansville falls to 36-43 with the loss as Southern Illinois jumps to 47-32 in the standings.

Starter Shawn Gilblair (10-4) earns the win after allowing four runs in 6.0 innings. Morrow (6-7) is the losing pitcher after allowing five runs in 5.0 innings. Cunniff (third save) fought around a late jam for the save.

Designated hitter Luis Uribe had three hits in the loss as Evansville also hit two home runs in the defeat.

The Otters will look to even up the series on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CDT as left-hander Matt Cain (3-7, 4.04 ERA) starts for Evansville as righty Cody Hall (7-0, 2.22 ERA) is on the hill for Southern Illinois.
