Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (35-43) @ TRAVERSE CITY BEACH BUMS (50-28)

Tuesday, August 14 - 6:05 p.m. CT

Wuerfel Park - Traverse City, MI

Game #79 - Road Game #37 (35-43), (17-19)

RHP #28 Jim Schult (5-5, 4.61 ERA) vs. RHP #10 Reid Kelly (7-3, 3.98 ERA)

Last time out...

Joliet beat Rockford 8-4 on Sunday. In the second, Rockford put two runners on-base, and Justino Cuevas hit an RBI double to take a one run lead. David Christensen responded for Joliet in the home half, sending a monster home run onto the Miller Lite Party Deck in left field to tie the game. Joliet took the lead in the third and never gave it back. With Patrick Norris on base, Brad Netzel slapped a triple to make it 2-1. Slammers hitting broke the game open in the fourth when Hawks pitcher Ziggy VanderWall loaded the bases with nobody out, and allowed four runs courtesy of a Eric McGee walk, a Josh Lyon single, and a run scoring double play for a 6-1 lead. Rockford scored three runs over the next three frames but Erik Lis effectively ended the contest in the seventh by slugging a two-run homer for the final 8-4 tally. Matt Sommo tossed six innings of three-run ball for the W.

For Starters...

Jim Schult is coming off an outstanding outing against the Road Warriors on August 8. He went eight innings, giving up two runs on three hits. Schult walked two and struck out five in the no-decision. The Slammers won the game 5-4. He is 0-0 with a 3.24 ERA in two appearances, one start, against Traverse City this season. He went five innings on July 23 at Traverse City, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits in a no-decision. The Slammers won the game 5-3. Schult leads the Slammers with 76 strike outs this season in only 82 innings pitched. He brings professional experience to the fold as the Eastern Connecticut State alum spent 2011 in the Canadian-American Association with the New York Federals. The traveling team struggled but Schult finished the season with 10 starts and his ERA was the best on the team among pitchers with 10 or more starts that season. While at Eastern Connecticut State, Schult was named the co-D-III National Player of the Year in 2011.

Series success...

The Slammers have won three straight series and eight of their last 10 games. If they win this series against Traverse City, it would be the first time all season the Slammers have won four straight series.

Against Traverse City...

The Slammers are 3-6 against the Beach Bums this season but took two of three the last time these two teams hooked up at Wuerfel Park. The two Slammers wins in that series came in extra innings and both featured eventual game winning hits by former Beach Bum Kyle Maunus. Only Joliet and Southern Illinois have won a series this year at Wuerfel Park.

To open...

Joliet has gotten off to a slow start this year in most series as they are 11-16 in series openers.

We're going streaking!

A win tonight would match Joliet's longest road winning streak of the year at four games.

Hot in August...

Joliet is hitting .275 as a team this month, their highest mark of any month this season. David Fox (.359), Josh Lyon (.357), Patrick Norris (.311) and David Christensen (.310) are leading the charge.

Five or more...

Joliet 22-11 when scoring 5 or more runs in a game. They are 13-32 when scoring fewer than 5 runs.

Walk this way...

Abel Nieves has drawn a team-leading 49 walks this season, good for 5th in the Frontier League. Even more impressively, he's the only active Slammers player to record more walks than strike outs this season as he has only fanned 32 times in 268 at bats.

Error indicator...

Joliet is 11-31 in games when they make an error. They are 24-12 in games when they do not.

Transaction Wire...

The Slammers released LHP Dustin Quattrocchi after the game on Sunday.
