Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums had a day off to let one of the toughest losses of the season fester. Then they took their frustrations out on the Joliet Slammers setting a team record for hits in a game with 20 as the Beach Bums won in an 18-1 romp.

The Slammers were the ones who scored first, tallying an unearned run in the first inning when Brad Netzel singled and moved to third on an error in front of a sac fly from Abel Nieves to put Joliet up 1-0.

From there it was all Traverse City. The Beach Bums tied the game in the first inning as Ryan Still walked to open the inning. Two batters later with Still on second after a groundout, Chase Burch singled him home to knot the game at 1-1. In the second it was a two out rally that put TC on top for good as Marcus Nidiffer doubled and Kyle Eveland was hit by a pitch before Still singled home Nidiffer to make it 2-1.

The offense kicked into gear in a bigger way in the third as Burch and Sean Gusrang were hit by pitched, sandwiched around a Jeff Flagg single to load the bases. Nidiffer stood in again and hit the Beach Bums first grand slam since May 18 to make it 6-1. Another run would come in during the fourth as Still doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a Brian Heere groundout and scored on a grounder by Jose Vargas.

After being held off the board in the fifth, Traverse City struck again in the sixth. With one out, still walked. Two batters later Vargas doubled him home for an 8-1 TC lead. Two batters later, Following a walk to Burch, Flagg singled to bring home Vargas. Kyle Colligan got in on the fun with his first hit of the night, a single to plate Burch and make it 10-1. The single also gave Colligan an eight game hitting streak.

The eighth inning proved to be one of the most potent innings in team history. Traverse City scored eight times on nine hits. Keying the inning were a pair of hits by both Matt Howard and Flagg and a bases loaded double from Vargas.

Lost in all the offense was a strong pitching performance by both of the pitchers used by the Beach Bums. Reid Kelly (8-3) earned the win allowing one unearned run on two hits over six innings. Mike Devine came in to start the seventh and set down all nine batters he faced, five on strikes to record his first professional save. Jim Schult (5-6) took the loss for Joliet.

The 20 hits Traverse City recorded broke the old record of 19 set on June 8, 2006 in a 12-0 win over Windy City. The 18 runs matched the most in a game this season for the Beach Bums and the nine hits in the eighth are the most in a single inning in team history.

Traverse City is back in action tomorrow on a Dollar Dog Night at Wuerfel Park as part of Weenie Wednesday. Regular hot dogs are just $1 and fans get a dollar off brats and the half pound Hawg Dog. Brooks Belter (8-2, 3.56) will take the mound for the Beach Bums against Steven Maxwell (6-7, 3.70) for Joliet. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
