EVANSVILLE, IN - The Evansville Otters completed their first sweep of the season by walking off in game one of a double header 8-7 and winning game two 10-4 Thursday night at Bosse Field.
Frank Meade provided the game winning hit in the suspended game one by clubbing his tenth home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth inning off Jordan Towns (0-2).
Florence had to come back to send it to the bottom of the ninth. Johnny Welch doubled to lead off the inning and after being sacrificed to third by Jordan Baker, Jay Johnson hit a fly ball deep enough to center to bring him in and tie the game at seven.
Justin Smith (1-2) blew the chance at his eighth save but ended up with the win after the ninth inning homer.
Meade's home run in game one was the second Otter homer. Greg Alexander took Moises Melendez deep in the fifth inning to cut an early Freedom lead to 5-4.
Nolan Shaffer allowed the Otters to take their first lead in the sixth when Jeremy Strack doubled home two Otters who were both walked to make it 6-5.
Welch finished by going 3-4 with a double and RBI for the Freedom and Erold Andrus finished 4-5 with two runs scored.
In game two, the Otters jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after one inning, but Florence came right back to tie it with a Welch RBI single off Rashad Ford.
That would be the last time the game would be tied as Otters offense took over. Everett Saul (6-2) made his third start of the nine game road trip and surrendered four more runs in the second as the Otters jumped on top 5-1. Saul was 2-0 on the trip before the set back Thursday night.
Eric Blackwell put the Otters even further ahead with a three-run shot to left field in the third inning to make it 8-1. Saul lasted through the third as all eight runs were earned against the right hander in his shortest start of the season.
Steve Pickerell added his third home run of the season for the Freedom in the sixth inning but it was not nearly enough as the Otters finished off the sweep by taking the seven inning game two 10-4.
Ford (3-3) tossed the full seven innings in his first complete game as a professional.
The Freedom (21-23) come back home to Champion Window Field for a Friday night game against the Southern Illinois Miners . Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. with it being a Fox 19 Fireworks Friday. Rozzi's postgame fireworks will be shot off after the game. For tickets, call the Freedom at (859) 594-HITS or visit www.FlorenceFreedom.com.
