Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, Pa.-- The Washington Wild Things (19-26), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, came back to defeat the Southern Illinois Miners (25-20), 7-6 Thursday night at CONSOL Energy Park, completing the three-game sweep.
The Wild Things were down four through three innings and had no hits in that time, but would rally in the fourth to get within one. First baseman Ernie Banks hit his eighth homerun of the season, a two-run shot, to break up the no-hitter.
In the seventh, Wild Things' shortstop Brett Grandstrand singled to leadoff and would score on a Michael Parker single to give the Wild Things their first lead of the night. The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Miners would score two of their own in the eighth.
As they have done time and time again, the Wild Things battled back. After a leadoff strikeout by third baseman Grant Psomas, outfielder Matt Sutton and catcher Kris Rochelle hit back-to-back homeruns giving the Wild Things a 7-6 lead, a lead they would not give back this time.
Starting pitcher Aaron Fuhrman struggled for the Wild Things, going just three innings and surrendering four runs. Reliever Nick Peterson (1-2) earned his first win of the season following strong relief work by newcomer Aaron Jenkins and Justin Edwards. Reliever Mike Damchuk took the loss for the Miners.
The Wild Things host the Evansville Otters this weekend before breaking for the All-Star game next week. Series begins Friday at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available at the CONSOL Energy Park Box Office or http://washingtonwildthings.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:55 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM.
