Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Traverse City Beach Bums were swept in a doubleheader by the Rockford RiverHawks, falling 11-1 in the opener and 8-0 in the second contest.
GAME ONE: ROCKFORD 11, BEACH BUMS 1 John Alonso took the first pitch of the second inning from Rockford starter Jay Monti over the wall in left to put Traverse City ahead 1-0. The lead was short lived as Rockford scored four times in the bottom of the inning against Beach Bums starter David Nathanson. Todd Martin singled to open the frame and scored on a sacrifice fly. With two outs, Jono Brooks hit his third homer of the year, a three-run blast to put Rockford up 4-1.
The RiverHawks added to the lead with three more runs in the third. Brandon Romans doubled to start the inning and scored on a single by Ross McCoy. Aaron Cone followed with a two-run single.
Four more runs crossed against Nathanson in the fifth inning as he departed without recording an out and Rockford ahead 11-1. Jason James led off with a solo homer to right to extend his Frontier League record hitting streak to 34 games. Doug Sanders drew a bases loaded walk from Chris Kupillas, who relieved Nathanson. Nathanson allowed a career high 11 runs, but only four of those were earned.
GAME TWO: ROCKFORD 8, BEACH BUMS 0 Rockford opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Matt Mazurek drew a leadoff walk, took second on a delayed steal, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a double by Jason James. The double marked the 35th straight game that James posted a hit in. Already owning the single season mark, James has now tied the Frontier League's overall record. James later scored on a wild pitch by Beach Bums starter David Dinelli.
David Dinelli could not make it out of the second inning as Rockford added four more runs. The big blow came off the bat of Anthony Albano who hit a two-run homer, his first with Rockford.
Shawn Joy relieved Dinelli and threw 3.1 innings, allowing a pair of runs. Jeff Williams threw the sixth. Traverse City was without a hit entering the fifth inning but Andrew Barbaro singled off of Rockford starter Matt Enderle to break up the no-hitter. Andrew Stafford followed with a single. Barbaro had two hits in the game.
The Beach Bums travel to Crestwood, Illinois to open a three-game series to close the first half with the two-time defending Frontier League Champion Windy City ThunderBolts in an 8:05pm contest tomorrow night. Frontier League East Division All-Star RHP Brett Bostelman (5-1, 1.95) makes his final start of the first half for the Beach Bums against West Division All-Star Dylan Axelrod (1-0, 3.38) for Windy City. The contest can be heard live on the Fox FM.
