Otters earn 12-9 victory

EVANSVILLE, IN - The Otters as a team hit for the cycle in the first inning of Thursday's game with the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti, scoring six times on their way to a 12-9 victory.

Kenny Gilbert got the inning going with a triple off the centerfield wall. Jeremy Strack, the next batter, doubled him home for a 1-0 lead. After a groundout and two walks loaded the bases with two outs, Matt Schneider singled to right, scoring two more runs. Tyler Diamond followed with his fourth home run of the year, a three-run shot to centerfield that put the Otters up 6-0.

The Sliders battled back with four runs in the third inning, scoring on an RBI double by Jonnie Knoble, a single by Zach Pace, a Clay McCord fielder's choice, and a Robbie Knapp single.

The Otters scored one run in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings on a single by Schneider, a ground ball double play off the bat of Kenny Gilbert, and hit batter with the bases loaded. They scored three times in the sixth inning on a Greg Alexander sacrifice fly and a two-run throwing error by Sliders' catcher Garrett Maines. Alexander finished the night 0-for-0 with four walks and the sac fly.

Otters' starter Dustin Renfrow (5-7) did not have his best stuff but got the job done. He allowed six runs (five earned) in five innings while walking two and striking out three.

Sliders' starter Dan Horvath (0-1) lasted only three innings. He gave up seven runs (six earned) on five hits while walking three and not recording a strikeout.

The Otters won the season series with the Sliders 4-2, their first season series win of 2009. The Otters (28-53) now head to Avon, Ohio to take on the Lake Erie Crushers in a three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm CDT.
