Evansville Otters News Release
August 21, 2009, AVON, OH - The Otters kept pace with Lake Erie Crushers in the first half of Friday night's game at All-Pro Freight Stadium, but the second half belonged to the Crushers as they turned a 1-1 game into an 8-3 win.
Evansville got on the board first when Kenny Gilbert doubled with two outs in the first inning and scored on Luke Hetherington's single. The Crushers tied things in the third inning when Otters' starting pitcher Andrew Werner hit Tyler Johnson with a pitch with the bases loaded.
Lake Erie went ahead for good in the fifth inning on RBI hits by Drew Saylor and Gordon Gronkowski and a runs scoring groundout from Eddie Tisdale.
Travis McCleary provided the only other Otters' run of the night with his first professional home run, a line drive down the right field line in the seventh inning. The Crushers would answer though, when Gordon Gronkowski hit a moon shot over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the inning for his 18th long ball of the year. Lake Erie would pad the lead on Brad Griffith's two-run homer in the eighth, his first as a professional.
Werner (3-2) took the loss, allowing five runs in seven innings while striking out seven. The Crushers' Cardoza Tucker (3-0) was brilliant, allowing only two runs in eight innings while striking out seven. The game could only be heard on 91.5 FM in the Evansville area and not on the internet due to technical difficulties at WUEV. The Otters (28-54) will look to even the three game set at a game apiece Saturday at 6:05pm CDT.
