Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
O'FALLON, Mo. - The Traverse City Beach Bums fell behind early and suffered a 6-2 loss in the first game of a series with the River City Rascals on the road Friday night.
Brett Bostelman retired the first two hitters of the game for the Beach Bums before issuing consecutive walks to Chad Maddox and Ernie Banks. Ryan Wehrle made the Traverse City starter pay by driving a 2-1 offering over the leftfield fence to put River City ahead 3-0.
A one-out homer by Jorge Gutierrez in the bottom of the fifth inning extended the lead to 4-0 as Gutierrez parked the first pitch over the wall in left. The Beach Bums broke up the shutout in the top of the sixth as Brandon McArthur led off with his second homer of the season, lifting a 1-0 just over the wall in left.
River City added an unearned insurance run to pad the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Chris Colton drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and went to third on a throwing error before crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jorge Gutierrez.
The Beach Bums had a rally thwarted in the eighth after scratching across a run to get within 5-2. Brandon McArthur singled with one out and Mike Epping banged a double off the wall in right. Michael Campbell deposited a single into center to score McArthur but Mike Epping was ruled out at the plate on a bang-bang play.
Scott Houin capped the scoring with a solo homer to lead off the ninth off of reliever David Hurst. Brett Bostelman was hit with the loss for the Beach Bums, working seven innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits.
