Kings Take Opener

SAUGET, IL- The Kalamazoo Kings scored three times in the seventh inning Friday night and held on to defeat the Gateway Grizzlies 7-4 in front of 4,932 at GCS Ballpark.

The Kings (51-31) got home runs from Brendan Murphy, a two run shot, and Amos Ramon in the inning. Murphy's home run, his second of the game, broke a 4-4 tie. Ramon made it 7-4 with a solo home run. The homers came off reliever Eric Ridener. Ridener (0-2) pitched 1.1 innings, allowing the three runs on three hits. He struck out four.

Murphy opened the scoring in the third inning, putting the Kings up 2-0 with a two-run home run.

Brandon Peters answered for the Grizzlies (33-48) in the bottom of the inning. Peters launched a two-out, two-run homer to tie the game 2-2. He finished 2-4 for the game. He was the only Grizzlie with more than a single hit.

Destan Makonnen put Kalamazoo back on top in the fourth inning with a two-run homer of his own. The Grizzlies had an answer again.

Alex Kerins made it 4-3 with a sacrifice fly to score Brandon Johnson, who had walked earlier in the inning. The Grizzlies tied the game in the sixth when Charlie Lisk scored on a dropped pop fly.

Jamie Arneson started for the Grizzlies. He did not get a decision. In six innings Arneson allowed four runs on four hits. He struck out seven and walked eight.

The Grizzlies and Kings continue the three-game series with a 7:05 game Saturday night at GCS Ballpark.
