Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Sean O'Sullivan scattered six hits over eight innings of work as Wil Ortiz drove home Chris Pettit in the top of the ninth to give the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 2-1 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps on Tuesday night in Grand Rapids.

O'Sullivan (2-3) struck out six and allowed just one run, a ground out RBI by Ryan Strieby in the bottom of the first. Sammy Leon got the first two outs in the bottom of the ninth and Aaron Cook got Santo De Leon to ground out to P.J. Phillips to end the game. It was Cook's second save in as many games.

Whitecaps starter Jonah Nickerson (2-3) was the tough-luck loser as he struck out nine and held the Kernels to five hits and pitched a complete game.

Chris Pettit and Wil Ortiz were both 2-4 with a double. Mark Trumbo had an RBI single in the top of the seventh to score Matt Sweeney, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

The Kernels improve to 15-13 with the win as West Michigan falls to 17-13. The two teams play again at Fifth Third Field on Wednesday night at 5:35 pm as Tim Schoeninger starts for the Kernels and Lauren Gagnier starts for the Whitecaps.
