West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Jonah Nickerson pitched the first complete game of the season for the Whitecaps but lost, 2-1 to Cedar Rapids. Kernels right hander Sean O'Sullivan pitched eight innings to earn the win.
Nickerson retired the first ten Cedar Rapids batters of the game and faced the minimum 18 hitters through six innings.
West Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a lead off triple to straight-away center by Scott Sizemore. He scored two batters later on a ground-out by Ryan Strieby.
The Kernels did not push a run home until the seventh when Mark Trumbo tied the game on a single to left that drove in Matt Sweeney.
In the top of the ninth, the winning run scored Chris Pettit singled with two out then come home from first on a double by Wilberto Ortiz to put Cedar Rapids on top, 2-1.
The Whitecaps put the tying run at third in the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back two out singles from Brennan Boesch and James Skelton. But Santo De Loen grounded out against side-arming reliever Aaron Cook to end the game.
