Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - Great starting pitching and timely hitting, two of the staples in the Dayton Dragons 23-4 start showed up again at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday night. Unfortunately for the Dragons and the 8,405 fans who packed the park, they both showed up for the visiting Peoria Chiefs. Peoria used a two run first inning against Dayton starter Jamie Arneson (LP, 0-1) and then rode the right arm of starter Jake Renshaw (WP, 2-0) to snap the Dragons 10 game winning streak with a 5-1 win in the opening game of the four game series.
Arneson, who was the last Dragons starter to pitch at the beginning of the season due to the cold and snowy weather, landed on the disabled list with a sore left shoulder following his start on April 9th. With the departure of Daryl Thompson, who was promoted to Sarasota of the Florida State League, Arneson came off the DL and took the hill for just the second time in 2007. With two down in the first inning Alfred Joseph got the Chiefs rally going with a double to right center. After the second walk of the inning from the Dayton starter, Josh Lansford got home the first run of the game with an RBI single to left. Yusuf Carter followed with a RBI hit to center and Peoria led 2-0.
Renshaw retired the first six hitters he faced on the night before allowing a lead off single to Gerardo Cabrera to open the third. When Joseph misplayed Cabrera's hit to right, the Dragons outfielder ended up at third, thanks to the two base error. Eddy Rodriguez got home the lone Dragons run of the night with a SAC fly to cut the lead to 2-1.
Arneson was finished after the third inning, allowing four hits and two runs both earned. The lefty struck out two and walked three on his return to the mound. Peoria extended the lead to 4-1, with a pair of runs off Lee Tabor (ND) in the top of the fifth. A Dragons error to open the inning and the second double of the night for Joseph that plated Matt Camp ran the lead to 3-1. Russ Canzler knocked home Joseph for a 4-1 advantage.
Renshaw cruised through 6.0 innings of baseball on the night frustrating the Dragons with eight strikeouts, allowing four hits and one unearned run. Jason Ruhlman (2.0 innings) and Rocky Roquet (1.0 inning) completed the night for Peoria, keeping the Dragons off the scoreboard.
Peoria added its fifth run in the eighth inning off Misael DeJesus (ND) on an RBI single by D.J. Lewis.
The Dragons and Chiefs play game two of the four game set Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field with a 7:00 PM first pitch. RHP Rafael Gonzalez (4-0, 1.93 ERA) gets the start for the Dragons, while Peoria counters with RHP William Muldowney (2-2, 3.43 ERA).
1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM. The game will also be carried live on the internet via All-In Broadcasting at www.daytondragons.com.
