OTTAWA -- Canadian Football League Commissioner Mark Cohon presented the Commissioner's Award to the ownership group of the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) tonight in Vancouver, site of Sunday's Grey Cup game.
The annual award is granted during Grey Cup Week to a group or individual for outstanding contributions to Canadian football.
Mr. Cohon cited OSEG partners Roger Greenberg, John Ruddy, Bill Shenkman, Jeff Hunt and John Pugh for their commitment to return the CFL to Ottawa.
"We are honoured to be recognized by the Commissioner in this manner," said OSEG Chairman Roger Greenberg. "The journey took longer than we had hoped but it was a labour of love and seeing the team in action on the field at the wonderful new Stadium at TD Place was an incredible experience."
"On behalf of my partners, I'd like to thank our fans and the entire OSEG team - all full-time, part-time and game-day staff - who worked long hours and tirelessly to make our first season of football and soccer at TD Place a success.
"Our football operations staff, coaches and players also deserve praise for their efforts during the team's first season. From having no players and a skeleton front office staff at this point last year to now having a fully-functional football operation is remarkable. We know that the wins will come and that the glory days of Ottawa football are going to arrive in the years ahead.
"We also thank all our partners: at the City of Ottawa, our corporate sponsors, our neighbours beside us in the Glebe and the construction crews who built the Stadium at TD Place and which continue to transform Lansdowne into an urban landscape worthy of great city.
"But most of all," added Greenberg, "we thank the fans who have shown their steadfast support. You cheered and urged our teams with pride, passion and showed the entire CFL that Ottawa football fans are second-to-none."
The REDBLACKS played in front of a sold-out TD Place on July 18 in the team's first home game, an 18-17 victory over the Toronto Argonauts. Each of the team's other eight home games were sold out, with crowds greater than the 24,000-seat capacity.
"Nine sell outs in the first year is incredible and we congratulate all our fans for being so amazing. It's a season none of us are going to forget," said Jeff Hunt, President of Sports for OSEG and one of the OSEG partners.
