North Bay Battalion News Release
NORTH BAY, Ont. - Robby Fabbri's third goal of the game, at 4:46 of overtime, gave the Guelph Storm a 5-4 victory over the North Bay Battalion in a fast-paced Ontario Hockey League game Thursday night.
Jason Dickinson and Tyler Boston had one goal and one assist each and Tyler Bertuzzi and Ben Harpur each earned two assists for Guelph, fifth in the Midwest Division with a won-lost-extended record of 13-9-1 for 27 points.
Goaltender Justin Nichols made 39 saves for the Storm, which completed a sweep of the teams ' season series after a 3-2 overtime win at home Oct. 10.
Mike Amadio registered one goal and two assists for North Bay, which also got goals from Mike Baird, Ray Huether and Brenden Miller. Goaltender Jake Smith faced 26 shots for the Battalion, 12-5-5 for 29 points, first in the Central Division.
Fabbri's goal ended a wide-open overtime period in which the Troops outshot Guelph 6-5 before a crowd of 3,304.
Harpur fed the puck on the left wing to Bertuzzi, who went wide while Smith, who appeared to have been shaken up during a previous sequence, was down. Bertuzzi faked a shot and passed the disc into the slot to Fabbri, who had an open net.
"It was a tough game and a tough way to lose when the referees blow a call in overtime," said Battalion coach Stan Butler, who took exception to the lack of a penalty midway through the extra session when Boston tripped Amadio.
With Guelph skating four on three, Fabbri opened the scoring at 4:51 of the first period when he snapped a wrister over Smith's glove from the right-wing circle.
Amadio responded at 7:27. Hampus Olsson blew past Zac Leslie on the left wing, raced into Storm territory and centred the puck to Amadio, who beat Nichols high to the glove side.
Dickinson scored at 9:51, firing a screened wrister from the right circle, and Fabbri made it 3-1 at 18:36, trailing the play on a three-man rush and netting a Boston feed from the high slot.
Huether hit the post from the slot in the second minute and just missed converting a Kyle Wood pass from the deep slot in the 15th. Nichols denied Alex Henriksson from deep in the left circle in the 16th minute and turned aside Mathew Santos's deflection of a Wood drive in the 17th.
Baird connected at 4:41 of the second period for his first career OHL goal. Baird emerged from the right-wing corner and banged home his own rebound at the right post.
Huether tied it 3-3 on the power play at 9:21. Nichols stopped Wood's shot from the left point but kicked the rebound to Huether, who scooped it into the net from the lip of the crease for his fourth goal of the season.
Guelph wasted little time restoring its lead as Boston put a Fabbri feed under the crossbar 20 seconds later, but defenceman Miller pulled the Battalion back to even terms at 15:59. Miller was deep in the left-wing corner when he sent the puck toward the slot. It hit Dickinson's stick and slipped between Nichols's legs.
The Troops had the best scoring chances in the scoreless third period, in which they outshot the visitors 13-6.
The Battalion visits the Owen Sound Attack at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The game can be seen live in North Bay on TVCogeco Cable 12 and heard on Country 600 CKAT.
