Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
TODAY: The Royals and Redbirds meet in the final game of the series, which Memphis leads 2-1. Air-time is 1:15 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com. The game will also be broadcast in Spanish on Radio Lobo, 97.7 FM.
LAST NIGHT: The Royals' thin pitching staff was shellacked in by Memphis 20-4. Santiago Ramirez (3-4) made an emergency start after Ryan Jensen was called up by KC. Ramirez gave up eleven hits and nine runs (eight earned) in 2.1 innings to take the loss. Memphis banged out 23 hits. John Rodriguez was 4-for-7 with a pair of home runs and four RBI. Bo Hart and John Gall also had four hits apiece. Gall homered and scored four runs. Adam Wainwright (5-3) got the win, giving up four runs on eight hits over 6.0 innings. The Royals committed a season-high five errors in the game.
ROYALS REPORT: Ramirez, who was making just his second start since the 2000 season, saw his ERA jump from 5.28 to 7.18. Last season with Round Rock in the Texas League, he posted a 2.63 ERA and a league-leading 32 saves. Wes Wilkerson allowed two earned runs in 2.2 innings last night, but did not walk a batter for his eighth consecutive appearance. Wilkerson is on a streak of 17.0 innings without giving up a walk. The club's modern record (since 1994) was set by Matt Saier in 1999, a 23.0 inning string without a free pass. *** The Royals only have nine healthy pitchers on the roster. So, Danny Tamayo, who just started Thursday's series opener, was forced to pitch 1.2 innings of relief last night on one day rest. *** Chris Truby smacked his fifth home run in his last eight games last night. Truby had hit just one homer in his first 22 tilts with Omaha. He has 17 RBI in his last 17 contests. *** Justin Gemoll extended his hitting streak last night to nine games, tying his longest of the season. Gemoll is hitting .417 (15-36) with eight RBI and nine runs scored during the streak. *** Over his past 16 games, Adrian Brown has as .303 average (20-66) and has scored 13 runs. *** In five games since coming back from an oblique pull, Calvin Pickering is 4-for-19 (.211) with a home run and three RBI. *** Ken Harvey missed his second straight game last night with a sore lower back.
STARTERS: RH Kevin Jarvis (4-2, 2.73) vs. LH Chris George (4-3, 5.74) George makes his 13th start of the season. The 25-year old lefty became the Omaha career leader in games started last Tuesday at Nashville, getting the win in a 7-3 victory (7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR). George's 90th career start eclipsed the former record held by Gary Lance (1975-78). In his two starts vs. Memphis this season, George is 0-1 with a 14.54 ERA (14 ER in 8.2 IP). In 2004, George went 8-6 with a 3.42 ERA in 20 games (19 starts) for Omaha and was 1-2 with a 7.23 ERA in 10 games (7 starts) for KC. He was selected by KC as a sandwich pick between the 1st and 2nd rounds (31st overall) of the 1998 draft out of Klein (TX) HS.
