DES MOINES -- First baseman Prince Fielder belted a pair of home runs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 7-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs on Sunday afternoon at Principal Park in the finale of a four-game series.
With the win, Nashville (33-31) remains a half-game behind Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division and earns a 3-1 series victory against the I-Cubs.
Fielder's two-homer game was his third of the season and upped his team-leading longball total to 15 on the year.
The Brewers' #2 prospect spotted the Sounds a 2-0 lead with a two-run shot to right off Iowa starter Phil Norton in the top of the first inning. Nashville doubled the lead later in the frame on consecutive two-out RBI singles by red-hot Mike Rivera and Iowa native Brad Nelson.
Nashville tacked on single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh frames to extend the advantage to 7-0. Fielder pounded his second tater of the afternoon in the fifth, a one-out solo shot to center off Norton.
Dave Krynzel, who went 0-for-4 in his first start for the Sounds since returning from Milwaukee, plated the club's sixth run of the afternoon with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly.
Former I-Cub Kevin Orie continued to enjoy a strong campaign against his old team, belting his 11th home run of the year -- a seventh-inning solo shot to left off Kevin McGlinchy -- to close out the Sounds' scoring.
Iowa broke up the shutout bid in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Mike Adams. Micah Hoffpauir opened the inning with a double then moved up one base on consecutive fly ball outs by Nate Frese and Mark Johnson, whose sacrifice fly brought the score to its final 7-1.
Nashville starter Rick Helling (5-3) logged his best outing of the season, picking up the victory with seven scoreless innings. Norton (1-5) gathered the loss after surrendering five runs over five frames of work for the Cubs.
The Sounds return to Greer Stadium on Monday to begin an eight-game homestand with the 7 p.m. opener of a four-game series against the Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA-Marlins). Monday's series opener, the first contest between the club in Nashville this season, will feature Sounds right-hander Justin Lehr (5-5, 6.38) taking on Albuquerque righty Nate Bump, who will make his first Triple-A appearance of the season.
