Beavers hammer Tucson, 8-4

Portland never trailed Sunday on the way to an 8-4 win over Tucson at PGE Park. The Beavers won three of four games in the series to drop the Sidewinders back to the .500 mark (32-32).

Ben Johnson put the Beavers on the board first in the bottom of the first when he hit his 13th homer of the year off Chris Michalak for a 1-0 lead.

Josh Barfield's infield single scored Michel Hernandez in the third for a 2-0 Portland advantage.

Tucson tied the game in the fifth inning when Andy Green ripped a two-out, two-run single off Chris Oxspring. Both runs were unearned after an error by third baseman J.J. Furmaniak.

The Beavers responded by scoring the next six runs including two unearned tallies in the bottom of the fifth. Matt Kata's second throwing error of the game allowed Furmaniak to reach to start the inning. After a bunt single by Barfield, Johnson singled home Furmaniak to put the Beavers in front 3-2. Barfield scored when Michalak induced a double play off the bat of Jon Knott.

Furmaniak slugged a two-run homer in the seventh off Shane Nance and the Beavers added two more runs in the ninth off Kevin Tolar.

The Sidewinders added a pair of late runs in the ninth when Sergio Santos doubled in Carlos Quentin and Koy Hill also scored on the play after an error by center fielder Ben Johnson.

However Tucson mustered just six hits in the loss a night after producing just three hits and a run.

Green went 2-4 with 2 RBI's. Santos went 2-4 with one RBI and one run.

Tucson dropped to 32-32 on the season. The Sidewinders return home Monday to begin an eight game home stand with a four-game series with the Salt Lake Stingers. Dustin Moseley (3-4 5.46) will start for the Stingers. Tucson's starter is TBA. The game will air live on COOL 1450 AM.
