Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Josh Barfield was 3-for-4 with an eighth-inning solo home run that broke a tie game and lifted the Portland Beavers to a 2-1 victory before 4,968 Saturday night at PGE Park.

Portland starter Clay Hensley lowered his season ERA to 2.89 by allowing a run on just three hits while striking out eight over seven innings, but he did not factor in the decision as the teams took a 1-1 tie into the eighth.

Jason Kershner (4-0) was credited with the victory after pitching the eighth. Brad Baker, who suffered his fifth blown save in a 6-5 loss to Tucson on Friday, worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 20th save.

The Beavers (33-29) limited the Sidewinders to just three hits on the night, with Conor Jackson, one of the top hitters in the Pacific Coast League, accounting for all three.

Mike Koplove (0-1) worked the final two innings to take the loss in his first outing for the Sidewinders (32-31).

Kerry Robinson, who extended his hitting streak to 11 games, led off the bottom of the third with a single and came in to score the game's first run on an RBI single by Ben Johnson. The base hit gave Johnson a nine-game hit streak.

Jackson produced his league-leading 23rd double to start the fifth, eventually plating the tying run on a sac fly from Sergio Santos.

Neither team was able to cash in on scoring chances in the seventh with the game still knotted.

The Sidewinders put two on with one out in the top of the inning, but Hensley got out of trouble when Koyie Hill grounded into an inning-ending double play. The Beavers, meanwhile, put two runners on with no outs in the bottom of the inning, but Bobby Scales was thrown out at the plate on Johnson's fielder's choice and Jon Knott struck out to end the inning.

The Beavers conclude their homestand against the Sidewinders Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Former Beavers mascot Round Tripper will make a return trip to PGE Park to entertain the crowd like he did 20 years ago. Kids TV icon Jimmy Neutron will also be on hand to heighten the family festivities.
