Memphis Redbirds News Release
Memphis, Tenn. â Omaha scored twice in the ninth inning to complete a rally that started with a 7-0 deficit, and the Royals held on to defeat Memphis 10-9 Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park.
After scoring two runs in the first and one in the second, the Redbirds batted around in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead. Omaha cut the lead to 7-5 thanks in part to two home runs from 2B Justin Gemoll, but Redbirds starter RHP Chris Gissell struck out the last six men he faced to hold the Royals. Memphis LF Brandon Berger hit a solo home run in the sixth to push the lead back to three, but Omaha scored twice in the eighth and twice more in the ninth off LHP Carmen Cali to complete the comeback. Memphis tried a rally of its own when 1B Chris Duncan led off the ninth with a double and scored on a DH John Gall single, but the Redbirds could not score the tying run.
All nine starters for Memphis had at least one hit, and five had two hits for the Redbirds, who notched double-digit hits (15) for the third consecutive game. Omaha and Memphis square off for the third game of the four-game set Monday at 7:05 p.m.
