Portland Beavers News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - Tim Stauffer earned his second win and six different batters logged two hits apiece for the Portland Beavers, who got back on the winning track with a 6-3 victory over the Salt Lake Stingers Sunday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field.
Stauffer (2-0) gave up three runs (1 earned) on seven hits in 6.0 innings to lower his season ERA to 2.16 through four starts with the Beavers, who committed three errors behind him.
A pair of relievers kept the Stingers (10-6) off the board before Brad Baker came on to get his fifth save, despite issuing two ninth-inning walks.
Damian Jackson hit his second home run for the Beavers, who have won eight of their last nine to climb to within a half-game of Salt Lake atop the Pacific Conference North Division.
Jon Knott had two doubles, while Jackson and J.J. Furmaniak each scored twice to help Portland (10-7) get back into the win column after having its seven-game winning streak come to a close in its last game on Friday.
The Beavers logged 14 hits in the game, their third-highest total of the season.
Scott Dunn (0-2) surrendered four runs in 5.0 innings to suffer the loss for the Stingers, who got three hits from Brian Gordon.
The Beavers got out to an early 4-0 lead with singles runs in the first and third innings and two more in the fourth. Robert Fick scored Kerry Robinson with an infield single in the first and Knott added an RBI double in the third. Michel Hernandez plated Furmaniak with a single in the fourth, and Bobby Scales scored on a double-play groundout.
Robinson gave the Beavers a 5-1 lead with an RBI single in the sixth and Jackson completed the scoring with a solo homer off Michael Brunet in the eighth.
The Stingers cut into the lead with a run in the fifth and a pair in the sixth on an RBI double by Gordon and a groundout later in the inning.
The series resumes Monday night at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific).
NOTES: Brian Falkenborg stretched his season-opening scoreless streak to 11.2 innings by pitching the seventh for the Beavers ... the first four batters in the Portland lineup were a combined 8-for-18 with four RBIs and three runs scored ... the Beavers, who were 13-3 against the Stingers last season, have won seven of their last nine at Salt Lake City's Franklin Covey Field ... Adam Kennedy, with the Stingers on a major league rehab assignment, was 1-for-5 in Sunday's game ... both teams left 11 men on base ... the gathering of 2,540 for the poor-weather game was the smallest crowd to attend a Stingers game at Franklin Covey ... right-hander Chris Oxspring will get the start in Tuesday's series finale in place of scheduled starter Steve Sparks ... the Beavers have their first scheduled off day on Wednesday before starting a four-game series at Colorado Springs on Thursday.
