Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria, IL (December 7, 2005) - The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights prevailed 3-2 over the Peoria Rivermen on this night at Carver Arena. Rivermen forwards Jon DiSalvatore and Trent Whitfield each registered one goal and one assist, and Reinhard Divis made 29 saves between the pipes for Peoria. Despite their best efforts, however, the Rivermen were unable to overcome the performance of Omaha left wing Cam Severson, who led the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights in this game with two of the club's three goals.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights evened the score at 1-1 with a shorthanded tally by Severson at the 10:46 mark of the first. On a shot from the right point by Omaha defenseman Brett Palin, Rivermen goaltender Reinhard Divis made the initial save but didn't control the puck. The rubber disc then ricocheted off of Severson at the top of the crease and found its way to the back of the net before Divis could react.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights went up 2-1 on Severson's second-frame goal. Carrying the puck around the back of the Peoria goal from right to left, Severson lost control of the puck upon reaching the left post. The puck hit a player in front, however, and bounced back to Severson, who swatted it by Divis to give Omaha the lead at the 5:00 mark of the second period.
Peoria's overall record goes to 15-7-0-1 with the result of this match, and the Rivermen now stand 9-5-0-1 at home in Carver Arena. With the triumph, Omaha improves to 12-9-0-5 on the season and to 6-5-0-0 on the road.
The Rivermen struck first in this contest, getting a power-play goal a few minutes into the first period. With crisp passes, the Rivermen worked the puck around the Knights zone until it came to center Trent Whitfield in the right corner. Walking it out to the bottom of the right circle, Whitfield threaded a pass across the goalmouth to unattended right wing Jon DiSalvatore, who banged it in at the left post at 6:02.
Peoria drew even with Omaha at 2-2 with another power-play goal. Taking a nice feed out of the left corner from DiSalvatore, Whitfield blew a shot by Ak-Sar-Ben Knights netminder Curtis McElhinney from the left hash marks at 18:43 of the middle frame.
In the third period, Omaha took the lead again. On a shot from the left point, Peoria's Divis made the save but left a rebound out in front. Knights right wing Carsen Germyn then got to the puck in the slot, near the right circle, and dented the twine behind Divis at 7:08 for a 3-2 Omaha advantage.
Next up for the Rivermen is a short trip to Chicago on Friday for a game versus the Chicago Wolves at 7:30 p.m.
