Norfolk Admirals News Release

At Scope, the Admirals turned back the Albany River Rats 4-3.

The Admirals jumped out to a two-goal lead with quick goals five minutes into the game. Quintin Laing came up with the puck in the corner to the left of River Rats goaltender Frank Doyle. Laing sent a feed to Michal Barinka in the high slot, and Barinka beat Doyle for his first goal of the season at 5:01. Less than two minutes later, Mark Cullen collected a rebound from an Admirals shot that had pinballed off several Albany defenders. Cullen found Martin St. Pierre, who poked the puck past Doyle at 6:43 to put Norfolk up by two goals. However, the River Rats clawed back before the end of the period. David Clarkson's wraparound trickled past Adam Munro into the net at 10:39. With 25 seconds left in the period, Aleksander Suglobov scored an even-strength tally to knot the score at 2-2 going into the second period.

Albany took a 3-2 lead 5:44 into the second on a Bryan Miller goal with the teams skating four-a-side. But the Admirals would fire back five minutes later. Cullen found James Wisniewski near the blue line while the Admirals were on a five-on-three power play. The Admirals defenseman whizzed a slap shot past Doyle at 10:13. Then, with under three minutes to play in the second stanza, Wisniewski took a shot from the point that was blocked in front. Nathan Barrett scooped up the puck and poked it past Doyle as he fell to the ice at 17:37.

The Barrett tally proved to be the game-winner, as Munro stopped nine shots and the Admirals killed an Albany power play for the final 1:09 of the third.

Adam Munro saw 20 shots on net and stopped 17 of them en route to the win. Frank Doyle stopped 33 of 37 Admirals' shots and picked up the loss.

Norfolk was 2-10 on the power play while Albany was 0-6.
