Olson Carries Tides Past Bisons, 3-1

June 14, 2007 - Garrett Olson struck out ten in seven shutout innings of work, pitching the Tides to a 3-1 win over the Buffalo Bisons Thursday night.

Olson was magnificent, taking a perfect game into the 6th inning. The 23-year-old southpaw retired the first 17 batters he faced before Jonathan Van Every lined a single into left field with two outs in the 6th inning.

Olson (4-6) threw 109 pitches in the outing, 77 of which were strikes. The 10 punchouts equaled Norfolk's season-high, matching Olson's 10 strikeout performance on May 4 vs. Durham. Olson leads the IL with 84.0 innings pitched, and he is third in the Orioles system with 75 strikeouts this season.

The Tides jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning off of Bisons starter Jeremy Sowers (0-1), who was making his first start for the Bisons after 12 starts with Cleveland to open the year. Brandon Fahey led off the frame with an infield single, and came around to score an a two-out single to right field by J.R. House.

Norfolk added to their lead in the 6th inning, courtesy of a long opposite field home run by first baseman Jon Knott. Knott's two-run home run cleared the bullpen in right field, giving the Tides a 3-0 lead.

Jim Hoey picked up his first Triple-A save for Norfolk, stranding two runners on base in the 8th inning before retiring the side in order in the 9th. The win was Norfolk's third straight, tying a season-high.

Hector Luna plated Buffalo's run with with an RBI single in the 8th inning.

Sowers allowed three runs on eight hits in 7.0 innings, walking one and striking out one.

The Tides and Bisons continue their four-game set on Friday night, with Jim Johnson (2-6, 3.66) set to take the mound for Norfolk against Buffalo southpaw Eric DuBose (1-0, 1.80). First pitch from Harbor Park is set for 7:15 p.m.
