Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - Bulls' starter RHP Jeff Niemann allowed just one hit in 6 1/3 innings and RHP Scott Dohmann and RHP Chad Orvella threw 2 2/3 perfect innings en route to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Indianapolis Indians on Thursday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Indians' one hit came in the top of the fourth inning when Jose Hernandez hit a difficult grounder to third baseman Joel Guzman and his throw was off the mark forcing first baseman Wes Bankston to reach into the base path to field the ball. Hernandez collided with Bankston's glove hand, jarring the ball loose and forcing Bankston to leave the game with a wrist injury. Niemann (6-4) allowed three walks while striking out eight.
The Bulls posted their first two runs in the third inning. Michel Hernandez earned a walk with one out and scored on a triple to center field from Elliot Johnson, and then Velandia followed with a sacrifice fly to right field score Johnson. In the sixth inning, Chris Richard singled to center field to score Jorge Velandia from second and move Justin Ruggiano to third. Joel Guzman followed with a sacrifice fly to score Ruggiano and give the Bulls a 4-0 lead. The Bulls add their fifth and final run in the eighth inning when Ruggiano scored again on a sacrifice fly.
RHP Marty McCleary (4-2) pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Indians, allowing four runs on three hits and four walks with nine strike outs.
The Bulls and Indians will meet again Friday night at 7 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
