Indianapolis Indians News Release
DURHAM, N.C. -- Durham right-handers Jeff Niemann, Scott Dohmann and Chad Orvella combined on a one-hit shutout in a 5-0 blanking of Indianapolis in front of 7,009 Thursday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Bulls improve to 33-34 on the season and 16-16 at home, while the Indians fall to 39-26 overall and 18-13 on the road. Friday will be the Tribe's 60th consecutive day atop the International League's West Division.
Niemann (6.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 SO), a 6-foot-9, 280-pound hurler, recorded his fifth quality start of 2007 and improved to 6-4 with the win. Dohmann (1.2 IP, 1 SO) and Orvella (1.0 IP, 2 SO), both working out of the bullpen, recorded eight outs by facing just seven batters.
Durham cracked the scoreboard in the third inning when C Michel Hernandez (0-for-2, 1 R) took a free pass and scored on 2B Elliot Johnson's (1-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) triple to center. Johnson then came plateward on SS Jorge Velandia's (0-for-2, 1 RBI) sacrifice fly to right.
The Bulls increased their advantage with two runs in the sixth. Velandia and DH Justin Ruggiano (1-for-3, 2 R) led off with a pair of walks. Velandia stole second and eventually scored on LF Chris Richard's (1-for-4, 1 RBI) single to center. Ruggiano went from first to third on Richard's single and crossed the plate on 3B Joel Guzman's (1-for-2, 1 RBI) sacrifice fly to center.
Ruggiano roped a three bagger in the eighth and touched home when 1B Brent Butler lifted the Bulls third sac fly of the night.
Tribe RHP Marty McLeary (5.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 9 SO) suffered the loss, falling to 4-2. DH Jose Hernandez recorded the Indians only base knock of the evening -- an infield single in the fourth.
Indianapolis continues its four-game series at Durham on Friday at 7 p.m. LHP Michael Tejera is slated to start for the Indians, while RHP Jae Kuk Ryu is expected to get the nod for the Bulls.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
