TONIGHT'S GAME: The first of a four game series and the fifth of eight meetings, the first of four at McCoy Stadium. Richmond is 1-3 vs. the Red Sox. Richmond was 0-4 vs. Pawtucket last season. The Braves have lost seven straight games at McCoy Stadium. Their last win at Pawtucket was June 24, 2005. The 30th of 46 games vs. the North Division and the 14th of 22 on the road. Richmond is 15-14 vs. the North, 9-4 on the road. The first of an eight game road trip. Richmond is in first place in the South Division by six and a half games over Durham.
TUESDAY'S GAME: The Buffalo Bisons beat the Braves 3-0 at The Diamond Tuesday. Four Bisons pitchers combined to blank the Braves on five hits. It was the first time Richmond has been shutout in 2007 and ended a string of 70 straight games dating back to last August in which the Braves scored at least one run. The Bisons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Keith Ginter. Brad Snyder smashed a home run in the fifth to make it 2-0. The Bisons opened up a 3-0 lead in the sixth when Ginter chased a run home with a ground out. The Braves threatened in the ninth, loading the bases, but Edward Mujica came on to get the last out. Aaron Laffey tossed six innings, allowing just two hits to earn the win. Mujica collected a save. Ryan Baerlocher took the loss. Carlos Mendez and Brent Lillibridge had two hits each for the Braves. Ben Francisco had two hits for the Bisons.
AS THE ROSTER TURNS: RHP Blaine Boyer has been optioned to Richmond by the Atlanta Braves. Boyer was 0-0 3.85 in five relief appearances for the A-Braves. The Braves sent OF Billy McCarthy to Kansas City to complete the Graham Koonce deal. McCarthy hit .224 with five home runs and 18 RBI in 49 games with Richmond. The Braves roster now stands at 24 (12 pitchers, three catchers, six infielders, and three outfielders). The Braves have three players on the DL and one on the Restricted List. 10 Braves have earned call-ups to Atlanta this season. The Braves have made 63 roster moves this season.
ON THE LEADER BOARD: The Braves lead the International League in pitching with a team ERA of 3.22. The Braves also lead in shutouts (eight) and in fewest home runs allowed (36). Richmond is tied for second in stolen bases (65). Gregor Blanco is tied for the league lead in runs scored (44). The Braves lead the IL in percentage of opponents caught stealing (42-94 .447) and Corky Miller leads IL catchers in caught stealing percentage (25-53 .472). T.J. Bohn is tied for fourth in outfield assists (6).
D-FENCE: The Braves have committed just one error in their last seven games. Over that span they have turned six double plays, racked up three outfield assists, thrown out five runners stealing, and picked two runners off. Martin Prado has not committed an error at second base this season in 194 chances. Braves outfielders have 17 assists this season. Richmond had 21 outfield assists all of last season. Three Braves (T.J. Bohn with six, Doug Clark, and Gregor Blanco with four each) are among the 15 IL outfielders with four or more assists this season.
IN CLOSING: Braves relief pitchers have a win-loss record of 22-7 and have 16 saves in 20 opportunities. All four "blown saves" came in the sixth inning. Richmond is 30-0 when leading after seven innings. Eight different Braves pitchers have earned saves this season.
ROAD WARRIORS: The Braves are 20-11 on the road (.645). They have the best road record in the IL.. Richmond is 17-15 at home. Three Braves "road" games, including two wins over Buffalo last weekend are taking place at The Diamond due to road snow/rain outs.
CRUNCHING NUMBERS: Brayan Pena's club season high 11 game hitting streak ended Tuesday. Jeff Bennett has tossed 21 straight scoreless innings over eight appearances.
