Oliveras & Mulvey Headed To Futures Game

Although they are both members of the Binghamton Mets, manager Mako Oliveras and pitcher Kevin Mulvey will be in opposing dugouts for next week's All-Star Futures Game at San Francisco's AT&T Park. Oliveras was named to the World team's coaching staff while Mulvey has been selected for the US squad.

Oliveras is in his first season leading the Binghamton Mets, but the Bayamon, Puerto Rico native is in his 21st season as a coach or manager, including four seasons as a Major League coach for the Chicago Cubs and California Angels. Oliveras will get to work under Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal, who will manage the World team. Because of his Futures Game selection, Oliveras will miss Binghamton's three-game home series vs. the Connecticut Defenders Saturday, July 7th-Monday, July 9th.

Mulvey was one of two players selected for the US team to replace Jacoby Ellsbury (Boston) and Matt Garza (Minnesota), who will miss the game because of their recent Major League call-ups. The Parlin, New Jersey native, who was also chosen for next week's Eastern League All-Star Game, is 10th in the EL with a 3.40 ERA to go along with a 6-8 record. The righthander also leads the B-Mets with 17 starts and 92 2/3 innings pitched. Mulvey, a second-round pick, was the Mets' first selection in the 2006 draft. The US squad will be managed by Hall of Fame outfielder Dave Winfield.

B-Mets outfielder Fernando Martinez was also chosen for the World team, but the 18-year-old has been sidelined by a right hand contusion and will not make the trip to San Francisco.

The Futures Game, which will be televised live on ESPN2, starts at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 8th.
