Connecticut Defenders News Release

The Connecticut Defenders finished the home stand strong behind a terrific performance on the mound by starter Brooks McNiven. One start removed from an outing at Dodd in which he allowed just 1 run, left with a three run lead and had the win squandered for him, he outdid himself and the Defenders closed the door for a 2-0 victory.

Though opposing starter Jose Sanchez was efficient and solid on the mound in the start, he made just two mistakes that ultimately cost him the game. In the bottom of the second inning he surrendered a solo HR (2) to 1B Tyler Von Schell and in the fourth inning allowed Von Schell to reach on a single before 3B Simon Klink ripped an RBI triple. The Defenders led 2-0 after four full innings and it would prove to be all they needed.

McNiven allowed just one batter to reach scoring position after the fourth inning and Osiris Matos took care of business in the eighth and ninth innings, retiring six of the seven batters he faced. Behind both strong performances on the mound the Defenders held on to win 2-0.

Jose Sanchez (L, 1-4) took the loss despite pitching fairly well. He pitched 7 innings, gave up 2 runs, 6 hits, struck out 4, and did not walk a single batter. However, Brooks McNiven was better tossing 7 scoreless innings, scattering 8 hits and striking out 2, without walking a batter. Osiris Matos (S, 4) picked up his fourth save of the season after turning in 2 scoreless innings, without surrendering a hit and walking 1 batter.

Tyler Von Schell continued his success with Connecticut putting forth a 2 for 3 evening, with a home run, 2 runs scored and an RBI. Eugenio Velez chipped in with 2 hits in 4 at-bats. The Defenders split the four game series with the Binghamton Mets and travel to Harrisburg to take on the Senators in a three game series beginning at 5:05 on Wednesday July 4.
