New Britain Rock Cats News Release

This week's homestand begins with double-barreled baseball action on July 4 at 4:05 PM when the Rock Cats take on the Portland Sea Dogs, Eastern League partners of the Boston Red Sox. Portland is once again stocked with highly-regarded players who Baseball America deem to among the very best in the entire Red Sox organization. The Portland roster, for example, claims RHP Clay Buchholz, the Bosox' top Pitching prospect - and Hamden resident and Trinity College alum, Jeff Natale - a tough competitor who just keeps getting big hits and exceeding expectations. These 'Cats and 'Dogs are now in a battle for a playoff spot, making this a very important four-game series for both clubs.

The historic Eastern League announced its 2007 All-Star Team this morning and three New Britain Rock Cats - INF Luke Hughes, RHP Tim Lahey and LHP Jose Mijares - were selected to appear in the 84-year-old circuit's July 11th mid-season showcase at Dodd Stadium in Norwich.

On Wednesday, July 4 from 11:30 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. and Sunday, July 8 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. the American Red Cross will be hosting a Blood Drive on their Save-a-Life Bus at New Britain Stadium prior to the Rock Cats game vs. the Sea Dogs at 4:05 p.m. on July 4 and vs. Reading at 1:35 p.m. on July 8.

Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. But only 5% of the eligible donors in the U.S. give blood in any given year. Despite all medical advances, healthy volunteer blood donors are the only source of blood.

Blood is needed for emergencies and for people who have cancer, blood disorders, sickle cell, anemia and other illnesses. Some people need regular blood transfusions to live.

Many people say they have never given blood because they haven't been asked. Please, consider yourself asked. The need is real. The need is now.

All presenting donors receive one free ticket to a future Rock Cats home game and will be entered in a raffle to win other Rock Cats prizes. To make an appointment to donate blood, or to find other drives in your area, please visit www.givelife.org or call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (1-800-448-3543).
