Tulsa Oilers News Release
This Friday, December 19th, the Tulsa Oilers will hold a special pre-game ceremony to honor former head coach, and NHL legend, Garry Unger. The Oilers would like to thank Unger for his tireless efforts in promoting the game of hockey and serving as an ambassador for the Tulsa Oilers organization.
Unger spent seven seasons behind the Oilers' bench and guided Tulsa to the 1992-93 CHL Championship. The 67-year old, who also played for the Oilers in 1966-67 and 1967-68, holds the franchise record for games coached (448), wins (230), and playoff victories (19). During his time in Tulsa, Unger was a constant presence in the community. His hospitality and generosity helped the Oilers create new fans across the city of Tulsa and his coaching style earned him the respect of his players and peers around the league.
Prior to coaching the Oilers, Unger played 17 seasons in the National Hockey League with six different teams - Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, Atlanta Flames, Los Angeles Kings, and Edmonton Oilers. From February 24, 1968 to December 21, 1979, Unger set an NHL record by appearing in 914 consecutive games and earned himself the nickname, "Iron Man." Unger appeared in 1105 NHL games and was named the MVP of the 1974 NHL All-Star Game.
During the first intermission of the Oilers' game on Friday night, Unger will be available for pictures and autographs in the Grand Lobby of the BOK Center.
