Tulsa Oilers News Release
TULSA, OK - Less than 48 hours removed from posting 62 shots on goal in a win over Brampton on Friday, the Tulsa Oilers set a season-low with only 14 shots in a 6-3 loss to the Rapid City Rush on Sunday evening at the BOK Center. Rush rookie Cody Ferriero recorded his first professional hat-trick as Tulsa fell to 2-3-0 against Rapid City this season.
A slap shot blast by Rush defenseman Riley Weselowski set up first goal of the contest at 11:02 of the opening period. Weselowski's rocket bounced off Oilers goalie Kevin Murdock and J.P. Chabot swatted the rebound into the net for his eighth goal of the season and a 1-0 Rush lead. Tulsa fired just three shots on goal in the first frame, a new season low for shots in a single period.
In the first minute of the second period, Tulsa winger Kyle O'Kane set up Jon Booras for a one-timer in the right face off circle and the Oilers center sent a shot past Danny Battochio to level the contest at 1-1. Ferriero put the Rush back in front with a long-range wrist shot at 7:54 and Daniel Tetrault sizzled a slapper through traffic in front of Murdock at 8:52 to swell the Rapid City lead to 3-1.
Early in the third, Rush winger, and former Oiler, Dylan Clarke, buried a pass from line-mate Johan Ryd to provide the visitors a three-goal cushion. The Oilers started to claw their way back at 9:57 when Matt Larke re-directed a shot from Nathan Lutz through Battochio for his third goal of the season. Tulsa narrowed the deficit to just a single goal at 13:04 as Jeff Jubinville scored from on top of the Rush crease after Drew Fisher and Adam Pleskach were able to win puck battles along the back boards. With the assist, Fisher extended his season-long point streak to eight games while Jubinville found the net for the fourth consecutive game.
It was Ferriero who deflated the Tulsa momentum at 15:08 with his second strike of the night to put the Rush up 5-3. On a late Rapid City power play, Ferriero completed his hat-trick at 19:44 and registered his fourth point of the night. The first-year forward who began the season with Pensacola in the SPHL, was one of five Rush players to finish with multiple points.
One night after holding the Rush to just a single goal in his Tulsa debut, Murdock allowed six goals on 32 shots and suffered his first loss as an Oiler. Tulsa was 0-for-2 on the power play and failed to score on the man-advantage in a total of ten opportunities over the three-game weekend.
The Oilers have already completed two-thirds of their home games and will start a seven-game road trip in Rapid City on Tuesday night.
