Oil Kings Start New Year in the Win Column

Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Saskatoon, SK - The Edmonton Oil Kings (24-8-2-1) kicked off 2022 in fine form as they dominated the Saskatoon Blades (17-14-1-1) at the SaskTel Centre skating to a convincing 4-1 victory on Saturday night.

The Oil Kings wasted little time jumping on the Blades as just 3:54 into the game, Jalen Luypen and Carter Souch combined to setup Simon Kubicek off the rush in the right-wing circle where he lasered a wrist shot past Saskatoon goaltender Nolan Maier for his 11th goal of the season to give the visitors an early 1-0 advantage.

The Blades were able to respond with a power play marker less than four minutes later after Egor Sidorov was setup by Kyle Crnkovic for a one-time blast in the right circle.

The Blades ran into penalty trouble late in the frame, giving the Oil Kings four consecutive power play chances, and finally on their fourth man-advantage Luke Prokop ripped a seeing-eye point shot past Maier for his eighth goal of the year to send Edmonton to the intermission ahead 2-1.

The Oil Kings would dominate the second period outshooting the Blades 18-2 but would only be able to add just one goal to their lead.

Blades forward Jayden Wiens was issued a five-minute major for boarding 2:22 into the period and on the lengthy Edmonton power play, Luypen deposited his 15th goal of the campaign after Williams found him open with a cross-crease pass.

The Oil Kings had several looks to extend their lead, but Maier came up with a number of critical saves to keep the Blades within two at the second intermission.

Jaxsen Wiebe scored his fourth goal of the season midway through the third period after a nice setup by Dylan Guenther for a backdoor tap-in to put the game out of reach as the Oil Kings would sit back and cruise to the three-goal victory.

Sebastian Cossa made 15 saves for the win in his return to the Edmonton lineup, while Maier finished the night making 36 saves on 40 shots. The Oil Kings went two-for-six on the power play, the Blades were one-for-four.

Next up, the Oil Kings head to Prince Albert tomorrow to take on the Raiders at 5:00 PM, you can listen to the game live at oilkings.ca/radio.
