Bedard's Four Goals End OT Thriller at Brandt Centre

Regina, Sask. - Connor Bedard's fourth goal of the game capped off a thrilling 7-6 overtime win for the Regina Pats over the Moose Jaw Warriors in front of a crowd of 4,070 at the Brandt Centre on Wednesday.

In Bedard's first game back from the World Juniors, put together a performance for the ages, scoring his first career WHL hat-trick, as well as his third career overtime winner, leading the Pats to a New Year's Day victory. It's the Pats fifth win over their last six New Year's Day games, with now four ending in overtime.

There were five different Pats' leads broken up by the Warrrios throughout this hockey game. After Regina took a 2-0 lead in the first with two short-handed goals, Moose Jaw tied it at two before the Warriors and Pats continued to exchange goals before overtime. On top of Bedard's four goal game, Logan Nijhoff (1G-1A) scored for a seventh straight game and Cole Dubinsky (1G-1A) added a multi-point effort.

The Pats extend their season series lead over Moose Jaw to 4-2. They'll meet again on January 29th and 30th for a home-and-home set.

THE GOALS

1st Period

REG 1-0 at 3:35 - Logan Nijhoff (13), assisted by Dubinsky // After Stanislav Svozil took a five minute major, the Pats scored short-handed, with Nijhoff ripping the puck past Carl Tetachuk from the left-circle, scoring for a seventh straight game.

REG 2-0 at 3:54 - Cole Dubinsky (10), unassisted // 19 seconds after Nijhoff scored, Dubinsky strips the puck away in the neutral zone, and capitalizes perfectly on a short-handed breakaway, beating the Warriors goaltender short-side to extend the lead.

MJ 1-2 at 14:54 - Matthew Gallant (3), assisted by Kaddoura and Robert Baco // After the Warriors maintained the zone and began to cycle, Matthew Gallant found the puck on his stick at the right circle, where he then walked in and fired the puck past Matthew Kieper to put Moose Jaw within one.

2nd Period

MJ 2-2 at 4:58 - Jagger Firkus (20), assisted by Hayes and Calvert // On the power play, it's another cycle to works out for the Warriors as Firkus fires a rocket of a shot into the top right corner from the high slot to tie the game.

REG 3-2 at 11:30 - Connor Bedard (15), unassisted // Bedard dangles through the Moose Jaw defence and pops his shot into top corner for a highlight reel goal.

MJ 3-3 at 12:15 - Maximus Wanner (2), assisted by Howell and Thomas Tien // Wanner advances past Jakob Brook and into the right corner before making a nifty move to the front of the net, and beating Kieper to tie it.

REG 4-3 at 12:44 - Connor Bedard (16), assisted by Howe // It's Tanner Howe finding Bedard with a perfect pass at the right circle where he makes no mistake, beating Tetachuk for his second of the game.

MJ 4-4 at 17:44 - Majid Kaddoura (1), assisted by Calvert and Gallant // Kaddoura's hard slapshot goes bardown to tie the game up again.

Third period

REG 5-4 at 1:55 - Connor Bedard (17), unassisted // Bedard uses enters the attacking zone, uses the defenders skates as a screen and rips it top corner for his first career WHL hat-trick.

MJ 5-5 at 5:22 - Tate Schofer (1), assisted by Tien // After the Pats were pressuring and controlling the puck in the Warriors zone, it's Schofer who takes the puck away in his own zone and goes coast to coast, slipping the puck through the legs of Drew Sim.

REG 6-5 at 13:03 - Drew Englot (5), assisted by Feist and Cadieux // Layton Feist throws the puck to the net from the mid point and after it was blocked, it's Englot banking home the puck in the paint on the power play.

MJ 6-6 at 14:38 - Robert Baco (5), assisted by Hoekstra // Baco finishes off a short-handed two-on-one, beating Sim short-side to tie the game and force overtime.

Overtime

REG 7-6 at 4:38 - Connor Bedard (18), assisted by Nijhoff and Smith // Nijhoff circles the net, outwaiting the defender and finds Bedard in front as he fires it into the net for his fourth of the game and second overtime winner of the season.

GOALTENDING BATTLE

Pats goaltender Matthew Kieper got the start, allowing four goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Drew Sim after two periods, where he made seven saves on nine shots in 24:39 of action, earning his second win of the season. Warriors goaltender Carl Tetachuk made 43 saves on 50 shots in the loss.

UP NEXT

The Regina Pats begin a home-and-home series on January 7th and 8th against the Saskatoon Blades. This will be the first meeting against the Blades

since they completed a home-and-home on October 24th. The Pats will then host the Calgary Hitmen on Tuesday, January 11th on home ice before a double-header against the ICE in Winnipeg on January 15th and 16th.
