Starting 2022 on the Right Foot
After capping off the 2021 calendar year with a flourish in a 2-0 shutout of Seattle, the Hawks head north now to take on the division-leading Silvertips. Portland has topped Everett in each of the clubs' last two meetings, and boasts a 3-0-1 record in their last four tilts, but they have not met away from the VMC since late October in a 4-3 comeback SO win for Portland. The Winterhawks have built up some very positive momentum as of late, and they'll hope to continue to gain ground on Everett and Seattle with another big win on Saturday night.
Everett Reinforcements
The Silvertips sent three players to the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship, and could be set to feature those players once more in tonight's clash. Ronan Seeley, Olen Zellweger and Michal Gut would provide a nice infusion of talent to an already deep Everett roster, however, Portland's biggest win over Everett (a 7-1 decision on Dec. 19) came with both teams at full strength. Regardless of the names on the lineup card, it's sure to be another tense clash between two of the best teams in the U.S. Division.
Hot Dante
December was a month to remember for several Winterhawks, including netminder Dante Giannuzzi. The 2002-born goaltender picked up his second shutout of the season last night, completing a 7-1-0-0 record between the pipes last month. His workload has picked up as of late, but Giannuzzi continues to answer the bell with key wins over U.S. Division competition. Until Taylor Gauthier arrives from Prince George to provide some relief, it'll continue to be Giannuzzi's net, and he's stepping up in a big way for his team right now.
