The Story:

Dante Giannuzzi picked up his second shutout of the season with a 19-save effort as the Winterhawks ousted the Thunderbirds 2-0 at the VMC on Friday. A goaltending duel gave way to Portland's third-period heroics from Marcus Nugyen and James Stefan, who finally beat Thomas Milic help the Hawks to their sixth straight home win.

Giannuzzi and Milic traded save after save to keep a pair of goose-eggs on the scoreboard for the better part of the game, but Nguyen busted the scoreless tie on a penalty shot just before the midway point of the third period. Portland's #72 calmly walked the puck in on Milic before cutting to his backhand for a tidy finish and the game's first goal. Giannuzzi held down the fort from there, and Stefan tucked home a loose puck at the side of the net with 47 seconds to play to seal Portland's win.

Portland heads to Everett on Saturday looking to open 2022 on a high note.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:

"The whole time I was just thinking about (Jaydon) Dureau, I know his penalty shot works so I took some tips from him...it was a forehand-backhand, but coming through the left side as a right-hand shot so opposite from Dureau, but I cut through the top of the circles, then give a little fake so (the goalie) bites and then bring it to my back hand."

Winterhawks forward Marcus Nguyen
