Oil Kings Snag 50th Win in Season Finale

Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Red Deer, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (50-14-3-1) held off a late third period surge from the Red Deer Rebels (45-19-2-2) on Saturday night as they walked out of the Peavey Mart Centrium with a 3-2 win.

The Rebels had the Oil Kings back on their heels in the opening minutes of the game, peppering four quick shots the way of Kolby Hay, but the rookie Edmonton goaltender was able to stand his ground to keep the game scoreless.

The Oil Kings opened the scoring at 14:21 of the first period after Carter Souch took a pass from Ethan Peters along the left-wing boards in the Red Deer zone, charged to the net, deked around one defender and as he was falling to his backside was able to sweep the puck between the legs of Red Deer netminder Chase Coward for his 22nd goal of the season.

Before the period was out, the Oil Kings were able to extend their lead to two after Souch again charged to the net, but this time his attempt created a juicy rebound that Carter Kowalyk pounced on and shoveled home his second goal of the campaign.

In the second, the Oil Kings and Rebels combined for six power play opportunities and it would be the Oil Kings cashing in on one of theirs for the only goal of the middle stanza.

Just under eight minutes into the period, Jakub Demek slipped his way into the Red Deer zone down the left-wall, faked a drop pass to the blueline and instead zipped a seam pass onto the tape of Jake Neighbours in the right-circle where the Edmonton captain would rip a shot passed Coward for his 17th goal of the year.

In the third period, Liam Keeler brought the Rebels to within two goals as he was able to deposit a wraparound just over a minute into the frame.

With just over eight minutes left in the game Arshdeep Bains would bring Red Deer to within a goal with a power play marker but that would be as close as the Rebels would come.

Hay finished the night making 29 saves for his 16th win of the season, while Coward and Connor Ungar combined for 18 saves in the losing cause.

Next up, the Oil Kings open the 2022 WHL Playoffs on Thursday, April 21 as they play host to the Lethbridge Hurricanes at 7:00 PM for Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Series.
