Spokane Chiefs News Release

Victoria, B.C. - The Spokane Chiefs couldn't keep up with the Victoria Royals on Friday night, falling 7-3 in the first of two-straight match-ups in B.C.

The loss, combined with a Prince George win and Vancouver overtime loss, puts the Chiefs alone in ninth place in the Western Conference with 51 points. They are one point behind Victoria (52 points), and two points behind Prince George and Vancouver (53 points apiece).

The Royals came out hot in the first period, kicking things off with four unanswered goals starting with Evan Patrician at 2:26. Marcus Almquist tacked on an unassisted goal three minutes later, followed by Gannon Laroque's 10th of the year at 8:43.

Almquist, who earned first star honors, added another just past the halfway mark with help from Tanner Scott and Patrician.

Spokane fought back in the last five minutes of the period when Chase Bertholet (assists - Saige Weinstein, Nick McCarry) and Nick McCarry (assists - Bertholet, Bear Hughes) each found the back of the net just 29 seconds apart from each other, at 16:13 and 16:42 respectively.

Victoria carried their momentum into the second period, with Bailey Peach netting his 37th of the year just over a minute into the frame.

The Chiefs were quicker to answer this time, as Bertholet got a pass to Cade Hayes right in front of the net. Hayes slid the puck past Victoria netminder Tyler Palmer at 4:53 to bring Spokane within two.

But that's as close as the Chiefs would get, as the Royals added on two more unanswered goals in the third period (Tanner Scott and Tarun Fizer).

Mason Beaupit turned aside 22-of-29 shots, while on the other end of the ice Tyler Palmer denied 25-of-28 Chiefs shots.

Spokane went 0-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Up next, the Chiefs will stay in Victoria and face the same Royals on Saturday night to end their regular season.
