Oil Kings Select Jakub Demek in CHL Import Draft
June 30, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings selected 2003-born forward Jakub Demek in the first round, 47th-overall, during today's Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.
Demek, a Kosice, Slovakia native, spent part of last season playing professionally for HC Kosice in the Slovak Extraliga, putting up two points (0G, 2A) in 10 games. He also played with the Slovakian U18 team registering 21 points (6G, 15A) in 31 games and played in three exhibition games for the Slovakian U20 team in evaluation for the upcoming World Junior Championship in Edmonton later this year.
The 6-foot-4, 196-pound centermen is eligible for the 2021 NHL Draft next month and is ranked 129th amongst European skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
"We're excited to welcome Jakub to the organization," said Oil Kings President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kirt Hill. "He is a 200-foot center who will add size, skill and depth through the middle of the ice. His international and pro experience will be an asset in transitioning his game over to the Western Hockey League. We look forward to seeing him in our return to Rogers Place."
Demek becomes just the second Slovakian-born player ever selected by the Oil Kings in the Import Draft, joining Martin Gernat (2011).
The Oil Kings also held the 80th-overall selection in today's draft but elected to pass after getting a commitment for the 2021-22 season from defenceman Simon Kubicek, who the Oil Kings acquired from Seattle in January, earlier this week. Each team in the CHL can carry a maximum of two import players on their roster.
