Oil Kings' Pysyk to Play for Team WHL in Subway Super Series
October 21, 2010 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Calgary, AB - The Canadian Hockey League, in association with the Western Hockey League, Kamloops Blazers and Prince George Cougars, announced today the rosters for Team WHL that will compete against Team Russia in the 2010 SUBWAY Super Series, and Oil Kings' captain Mark Pysyk has made the team for the second straight year.
Pysyk will compete for Team WHL at the 2010 SUBWAY Super Series that will take place November 8-18, 2010, and marks the eighth straight year that teams of CHL all-stars have competed against Team Russia in preparation for the World Junior Hockey Championships.
Pysyk (Sherwood Park, AB) is the Oil Kings' captain and was selected 23rd overall by the Buffalo Sabres at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft this past June. The 18-year-old was the team's top defenceman and most valuable player last season, and also competed for Team WHL at the 2009 Super Series. His other Team Canada experience includes playing at the 2009 U-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial, the 2009 World Under-17 Challenge and the 2010 World Junior Development Camp.
The SUBWAY Super Series is an integral part of the evaluation process prior to Team Canada's final selection camp in December. This season, Canada will be competing for their 13th straight medal at the 2011 tournament in Buffalo, N.Y.
Team WHL will face Team Russia in games five and six of the series, to be played Wednesday, Nov. 17 in Kamloops, B.C., and Thursday, Nov. 18 in Prince George, B.C. Pysyk is one of only 10 WHL players who will play in both games against Team Russia. The first two games of the series are hosted by the QMJHL, with the OHL hosting games three and four.
Team WHL was selected by a special committee of WHL general managers, along with Kevin Prendergast, Hockey Canada's Head Scout for the Canadian National Junior Team, as part of the selection process for the 2011 World Junior Hockey Championships.
Pysyk and the rest of the Oil Kings will open a four-game homestand on Friday night at 7 p.m. against the Kamloops Blazers at Rexall Place. Friday is also FREE Toque Night, as the first 1,500 fans will receive a free Oil Kings toque. The Oil Kings will also host the Kootenay Ice on Sunday at 2 p.m., as it's another Edmonton Sun Autograph Sunday & Family Skate.
Individual game tickets for all Oil Kings home games are on sale now and start at just $15 in the ATB Financial Zone. Season seats start at less than $9 per game, with the addition of some new Mini-Packs and Flex Plans this season as well. Tickets are available at any Ticketmaster outlet, online at oilkings.ca, or by calling 780-414-GOAL (4625).
