
Four Winterhawks Selected for Subway Super Series

Winterhawks players Ryan Johansen, Brett Ponich, Ty Rattie and Brad Ross have been selected to represent the Western Hockey League in The SUBWAY(r) Super Series against Team Russia. There will be two games between the WHL and a team of Russian players, and the four Winterhawks players will suit up in the game on November 18 in Prince George, British Columbia. The four Winterhawks on the roster is the most from any team in the WHL.
This marks the eighth straight year that teams of Canadian Hockey League All-Stars have competed against Team Russia in preparation for the World Junior Hockey Championships. The SUBWAY(r) Super Series is an integral part of the evaluation process prior to Team Canada's final selection camp in December. Johansen, Ponich and Ross attended Canada's National Junior Team development camp in August.
Johansen, the fourth overall selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets has three goals and eight assists for 11 points in nine games this season. Last season as a rookie he posted 69 points in 71 games, then added 18 points in 13 playoff games.
Ponich, the Winterhawks' captain, was a second round selection by the St. Louis Blues in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. This season Ponich has five assists and is tied with Rattie for the league lead in plus/minus with a +12 rating. This will be Ponich's second SUBWAY(r) Super Series, having represented the WHL last season.
Rattie is leading the Winterhawks in scoring this season with 22 points in 12 games, ranking him third in the WHL, and his +12 rating is tied with Ponich for the league lead. Rattie, who is eligible for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, is the only 17-year-old player to be selected for the November 18 game.
Ross was a second round selection of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He has 12 points in 11 games this season after posting a career-high 68 points last season. Ross was the WHL Player of the Week for the week of September 27.
The SUBWAY(r) Super Series features the Russian team playing two games each against all-star teams from the WHL, Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. For more information about the event and tickets please visit www.subwaysuperseries.com
