The Portland Winterhawks (9-2-0-1) beat the Everett Silvertips (5-3-1-1) 2-0 Wednesday night at the Memorial Coliseum to earn their third straight win and seventh victory in the last eight games.

Mac Carruth earned the shutout, the first of the season for Portland, stopping all 22 Everett shots. It was the second shutout of Carruth's career, with the first also coming against the Silvertips last season on March 9.

After a scoreless first period the Winterhawks dictated the flow of play in the second. The Winterhawks forced Everett into penalties throughout the frame, generating six power play opportunities in the second period alone, cashing in on two of them.

The first goal came 7:50 into the period when Oliver Gabriel drove to the net and tried to put it past Silvertips netminder Kent Simpson, who turned away the shot. But Teal Burns came in and slammed in the rebound for his first career WHL goal.

Later in the period, Ty Rattie fed Sven Bartschi in the slot, who fired it past Simpson to make it 2-0. The goal extended both Rattie and Bartschi's point streaks to six games apiece, with Rattie amassing 14 points in that span, and Bartschi 13.

From there the Winterhawks didn't allow Everett to get anything going, as Portland held the Silvertips to just four third period shots to seal the victory.

The Winterhawks finished 2-7 with the man advantage, while killing all three Everett power plays.

The Hawks return to the ice Friday night when they host the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Rose Garden at 7 p.m. in the Dash for Cash Game. Ten thousand silver dollars will be spread out on the ice and 40 lucky contestants will have two minutes to grab as many of the coins as they can.
