Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings have named Jake Neighbours as their 14th captain in modern franchise history, the team announced today.

"Jake's been a big part of our organization for a long time and is one of our marquee players here," said Oil Kings President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kirt Hill. "He truly exemplifies what we want of our players both on and off the ice.

"With his pedigree and his experience now, after playing in the NHL for nine games, he was the obvious choice to lead our group this year."

Neighbours, 19, recently rejoined the Oil Kings after spending the last two months with the NHL's St. Louis Blues, appearing in 9 games and tallying two points (1G, 1A), two penalty minutes and a -2 plus/minus rating. He was selected by the Blues with the 26th-overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

The Airdrie, AB product is entering his fourth season in the WHL, having spent his entire career with the Oil Kings after being selected by the organization in the first-round, fourth-overall, of the 2017 WHL Draft.

In 141 career games, he has put up 131 points (43G, 88A), 87 penalty minutes and a +47 plus/minus rating. In addition, he has racked up 12 career playoff points (4G, 8A), 10 penalty minutes and a +8 plus/minus rating in 16 career post-season games.

The 6-foot, 197-pound forward is no stranger to wearing a letter on his uniform having served as an alternate captain for the Oil Kings during the 2020-21 season, captained Team Canada White at the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and was an alternate captain for Team Canada at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where he won a silver medal.

Neighbours' leadership traits were recognized by the club at the end of the 2020-21 season when he was named the Kristians Pelss Memorial Award winner for his commitment to hard work on the ice, as well as his dedication to being a great teammate and member of the community off the ice.

"I've tried to be a leader since I got here at 16 years-old and I think I've done a good job of that," said Neighbours. "I'm just going to continue to be who I am and not try to change too much, I know that the staff all trust me to lead this team and I'm going to do my best to do that."

Neighbours will make his Oil Kings season debut tonight as the team is in Regina to take on the Pats at 6:00 P.M. MT.
