Familiar Foe
After revisiting a few old friends north of the border for the first time in a couple of years, the Winterhawks face off against a team they have already gotten to know well in 2021. Portland has dueled with Seattle three times this season, topping the Thunderbirds once and dropping the other two contests. Seattle enters the game on a seven-game winning streak, but the Winterhawks' lone win over the Thunderbirds came on the road earlier this year.
At this point in the season, though, Portland finds itself looking up at Seattle in the standings. As the Hawks continue to find their game, picking up divisional victories will go a long way towards not only climbing the U.S. Division playoff picture, but gaining confidence in the locker room as well. Going on a successful run starts with one win, and the Winterhawks have a great opportunity to knock off a rival on Friday night.
Kozak Hits the Century Mark
Just over a week after Clay Hanus played his 200th WHL game, another Winterhawk looks forward to a milestone night against Seattle. Forward Tyson Kozak is set to skate in his 100th career game in the WHL, each of which has come in a Portland sweater. The 2021 seventh-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres ranks third on the team with nine points in 13 games this season, and serves as a key part of Portland's attack alongside players like Jaydon Dureau, Cross Hanas and James Stefan, among others. Look for Kozak to come out buzzing on an exciting night in his career.
Sticking With It
Last time we saw the Hawks hit the ice, they fell to a strong Vancouver team despite controlling much of the play and generating chances nearly every shift. Some stout goaltending and tough bounces combined to keep Portland from lighting the lamp in that matchup, but the Hawks know they put up a good effort.
"I thought our team had a really good game. We had 40 shots tonight. I think we outplayed them pretty much the whole game. Just had a tough start in the first," said forward Jonah Bevington on Saturday night.
The next step is to find ways to execute through adversity. As the Hawks battle a talented Seattle side, they'll lean on what worked against Vancouver with an eye on turning momentum into offensive production.
