Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings kicked off their Family Day weekend with a loss to the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday night at Rogers Place.
The Oil Kings and Hitmen skated to a very entertaining, back-and-forth opening 20 minutes that resulted in a 2-2 tie at the first intermission.
The Hitmen opened the scoring just 36 seconds into the contest thanks to a power play goal from Carter Yakemchuk who was able to a get a friendly bounce in front of the Edmonton net on a point shot.
Just 3:02 later, the Oil Kings were able to level the score after Gavin Hodnett, Luca Hauf and Loick Daigle worked a tic-tac-toe play to perfection, finished off with a short-side snipe from Daigle from the right-circle for his fourth goal of the season.
The Oil Kings took the lead at 11:29 of the first period with a power play goal of their own after Rilen Kovacevic did an exceptional job to keep the Hitmen from clearing the puck just inside the Calgary line, he would then setup a wide-open Hodnett in the right-circle that he scorched into the back of the net for his 11th of the season.
The Hitmen would not let the Oil Kings lead for long though as just 1:38 later, they were able to tie up with another power play goal, this time from Sean Tschigerl who ripped home a one-timer from the right-circle.
In the second period, the Hitmen were able to take firm control of the game scoring three times in three different ways.
Vojtech Husinecky restored the Hitmen lead with an even-strength marker 2:47 into the middle stanza, which was followed up by a shorthanded goal by David Adaszynski at 8:24 and then a power play goal from Yakemchuk at 16:19, his second of the game, to provide the damage for the visitors.
In the third period, the Hitmen tacked on a couple of more goals including their fourth power play marker of the contest from Adaszynski and a London Hoillet tally to finish the scoring.
Kolby Hay ended the night making 31 saves for the Oil Kings, while Brayden Peters turned in 24 saves for the Hitmen. Edmonton went 1-for-5 on the power play, Calgary was 1-for-6.
