Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings dropped a tight-checking 4-2 decision to the Red Deer Rebels on Friday night at the Peavey Mart Centrium.
In the first period, the Oil Kings would outshoot the Rebels 8-7 but neither team would be able to put a goal up on the board as they entered the first intermission scoreless.
In the second period, the two clubs combined for three goals in the span of 2:24 with Red Deer getting a pair of them to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
At 6:24, Dwayne Jean Jr. opened the scoring by muscling home a rebound off a Marek Schneider point shot.
Rhett Melnyk quickly tied the game for the Oil Kings just 1:09 later with his eighth goal of the season after he picked the pocket of a Red Deer defenceman, broke in on a breakaway and faked out Red Deer netminder Rhett Stoeser.
The Rebels reclaimed their lead at the 8:48 mark of the period after Jayden Grubbe was able to bank a cross-crease pass in off an Edmonton defenceman on a Red Deer man-advantage.
Halfway through the third period, Melnyk collected his second of the night after he was setup in the slot on a pass from Gavin Hodnett and from there he picked the top corner to tie the game at two.
The game looked destined for overtime, but with just under 90 seconds left in the contest, the Oil Kings turned a puck over at their own blueline and the Rebels made them pay as Kalan Lind finished off an odd-man chance at the Edmonton net.
Kai Uchacz hit the empty-net 21 seconds later to give the Rebels an insurance marker.
Kolby Hay finished the night making 24 saves, while Stoesser turned in 19 saves for the win. The Oil Kings went 0-for-4 on the power play, the Rebels were 1-for-3.
Next up, the Oil Kings host their 15th annual The Brick Teddy Bear Toss game, presented by Global Edmonton, against the Red Deer Rebels tomorrow night at 7:00 P.M.
